I think it’s very important that the severity of Tyler Clementi’s death be kept in the light. What happened to Tyler Clementi is bound to happen to many more college students around the country. A message must be sent public officials, especially to school administrators, and to those groups who oppose same-sex or sex anything groups. No one is immune to the type of behavior exhibited by Dharun Ravi and Molly Wei of Rutgers University. As part of their punishment for aiding in the death of Tyler Clementi, let the cameras shine on them, 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. Invasion of Privacy? This cannot be the only thing these two will be charged with! They actually killed this young, talented college student. Just think, had they not subjected him to such cruel and unrepentant treatment, the gift that he had to share with the world would not be lost. Now, we will never know his value to the world, let alone the world of music.
Again, my heart goes out to the Clementi Family. I do hope that they would consider enacting some sort of Bill that would hold school officials, websites, and anyone affiliated with the destruction of any person related to a hate crime accountable for their demise. The universities should have a system that would immediately notify them of potential harm to one of their students. Websites, they should be able to find the location of the ip address and notify authorities (what is regarded as confidential when it comes to the possibility of death?). Dharun Ravi and Molly Wei, students who led another student to his death should be charged with accessory to murder. A charge of “Invasion of Privacy” should only be available due to a one-time incident. The fact that their acts of human disregard happened more than once should constitute as voluntary manslaughter.
If something is not done about students and their “adult-like” pranks and behaviors, we are truly headed for devastation. When we try and teach family values, let’s all remember that death is a family value and it should be taken seriously…unless there is so much hate in one’s family already until hating someone else’s family just doesn’t matter. It was asked in another write if the students, Dharun Ravi and Molly Wei, were or are American citizens. Maybe we should take a look at that as well. Authorities have only acknowledged that the two are students at Rutgers.
