Home, came the Parolee

The Almighty came home tonight
Fresh as the driven air
Everyone showed much care
Then turned as if he never left there
Together again they were in the room
where life had passed him by
They all said prayer
for forgiveness, patience, and love
Mother’s heart was aglow
A quarter-century
it took him to return
He knew all but had to share little
because they all said prayer
gave thanks
that but for a moment
an angel guided him safely back
And forth he would return
knowing full well
that forgiveness, patience, and love
should not
could not be taken for granted again
And in another quarter-century
would Mother’s heart still be beating
along with his
and all the others in the room?
