Difference. Indifference.

Difference. Indifference.

A man I know

was diagnosed with high blood pressure

He found a doctor who listened to him

Now, he’s under control and loves beets and smoothies

A woman I know

found a cure for her type of cancer

Her doctor referred her to a Specialist

Talk about dumb luck, huh?

A Black man I know

was diagnosed with high blood pressure

He was given a vial of pink pills

The pill bottle never asked him if he could read

A Black woman I know

was rushed to the hospital because of her acid reflux

The x-ray she finally had showed something else

Now, she’s too weak to take that vacation trip

When voices are not heard

assumption are made

For no one should dispute the spoken word

until a head is forever laid

In our final resting place

We all look the same

only then, can we all be looked in the face

instead of pointing fingers towards the one to blame

Flowers in his hair

As the song plays

We remember the days

We didn’t have a care

Like the flowers in his hair

We always knew what time it was

Even when we didn’t

But boy, what a buzz we had

Before we knew what it really meant

Dickie was our friend

You could say he had a special flair

All the neighborhood kin

Knew him as the boy with flowers in his hair

Where one went

So did the other

Even when our rent was spent

Richie looked out for a brother

He never had a care in the world

And kept a smile on his face

How could he give so many necklaces of pearls

When he never even left his place

But Dickie was our friend

Long before they called for Dick

The strongest man’s wrist would bend

In our presence as a trick

Dickie had our backs

And my how the people would stare

His painted on jeans or dark, baggy slacks

Made them forget the flowers in his hair

And the song plays on…

Dance with the girl (instead of a woman married to a man)

 A pretty wallflower

She is

Smiling that smile against a wall

Just so it doesn’t fall

It doesn’t want to let her go

All it does is frown

She should be in the light

Where she can bring the house down

Everybody’s swayin’

And  lookin’ real nice

What a time for playin’

And for takin’ some real good advice

The ways of a loving world

Some may never understand

Take her hand, and dance with the girl

Instead of a woman married to a man

She’s got her ways

Her vows made her pure and true

With long nights and long days

Making love ain’t all you can do

What’s a man’s man

When she’s your number one fan

She’s got your back

So it takes a lot to stay on track

She’s more than a diamond, more than a pearl

Made for the grandstand

Just remember to dance with the girl

Instead of the woman married to a man
